Apple toughens iPhone screen, boosts battery life

Apple has upped its claim for the iPhone's battery life, now saying the touchscreen smart phone will offer an eight-hour talk time. It's also decided to ship the machine with a glass front in a bid to beat the scratches spotted by so many early iPod Nano buyers.

Apple iPhone
Apple's iPhone: will it fall on its glass?

Both changes undoubtedly come from real-world testing and the development work that's gone into the iPhone hardware since Apple CEO Steve Jobs unveiled the handset in January. Comments allegedly made by folk who'd had their hands on the iPhone earlier this year highlighted issues with both battery life and screen resilience, and Apple's statement today certainly lends verisimilitude to those claims.

So what's changed? Apple originally had the iPhone's single-charge longevity down as five hours' talk time, video playback time and web browsing time, and 16 hours' music playback. Today's revised figures up those number by up to 60 per cent: eight hours' talk time, six hours' browsing time, seven hours' video playback and 24 hours' music listening.

It's all highly theoretical, of course, as were Apple's original numbers. We're sure, under lab conditions, with the screen dimmed right down, the iPhone can deliver those new figures, but if the handset actually delivers them in the real world, it'll be the first smart phone that ever did match the promised spec.

As Apple admits: "All Battery claims are dependent upon network configuration and many other factors; actual results may vary."

Apple now has a better idea how many iPhones it's going to sell, and punching that into the company's humungous iPhone Excel spreadsheet reveals it can afford to fit a pricier, "optical-quality glass" panel on the front and either a bigger or a more advanced battery without too many negative effects.

Or it's simply decided it can't risk the reputation of a $600 handset on such factors and is taking the hit.

Blackberry 8900 Curve

This week we figured we’d back about the new Blackberry 8900 also known as the the Curve. It’s not been released yet but after the disappointment that the Storm left people are really looking forward to the new curve. The older curve (8300) was a big success and was actually one of the most popular. To this day we at puremobile.ca have that as a top seller.

Now about the Blackberry 8900 Curve. The one thing lacking is 3G, but it does have a fast EDGE and Wi-Fi. It looks like a smaller version of the Bold 9000 but since it hasn’t been released (except in certain European markets) no one has actually really had any hands on with the phone yet.

It does come with the newer operating system that is similar to the Blackberry Bold 9000. So it’s a very clean fast interface that should prove to be quite reliable.

In the end as we said it’s still not officially released. There is hopes that it will be out by Christmas but no one is sure of a North American release. It has come out in Germany but the truth is they use a different keyboard layout so it’s not even worth trying to get it unlocked.

For now all we can do is wait. As soon as www.puremobile.ca gets one we’ll post a full review.

Black Berry Bold 9000

3G iPhone Killer - the BlackBerry Bold 9000 is now with various high-speed connectivities, such as HSDPA, EDGE, WiFi, Bluetooth etc

Blackberry Bold 9000, which is the latest and most powerful that RIM makes to tackle the next generation, 3G iPhone. The Blackberry Bold 9000 will be equipped with various high speed data connectivities that will actually squeeze the 3G iPhone to one corner.

The BlackBerry Bold 9000 will feature tri-band HSDPA, quad-band EDGE, stereo Bluetooth, WiFi A,B and N and also autonomous GPS. Some claim the Blackberry Bold 9000 looks a bit iPhone-esque, especially with its glassy display, generally flat profile and rounded corners.

The Blackberry Bold is similar to its predecessors, which carries the QWERTY keyboards, and it’s shaped like more or less the same to the earlier models such as the Curve. The Bold gives little customization for its back, which it’s removable covered in black leatherette. And you’ll be able to change it later by buying replacement backs, which will be available in different colors, such as blue, brown, green, gray and red.

The BlackBerry 9000 Bold has some improvements for its QWERTY, which it’s claimed to be inspired by guitar with thin metal strips between each row. And the keys are sculpted to help users avoid fingertip slippage.

The Bold boasts a 2 Megapixel camera which is capable of up to 5x digital zoom. And the most worth-mentioned part is the CPU used within this phone, which is the 624-MHz StrongARM processor with full MMX that is claimed to be the most powerful CPU used on a handheld device to date. With this extra power CPU, it allows the BlackBerry Bold to handle full-motion video on the 480×320, 65k-plus-color display, which has double the resolution that the Curve has.

Watching video on the Bold will be smoother than the iPhone and giving you the feeling that the displayed images are in higher resolutions. As the Bold has a smaller screen size but is capable of displaying the same number of pixels as what the iPhone does. The only capability that the Bold lacks is the touchscreen.

Other worth mentioned goodies within the Bold are the 1GB on-board secure memory (on top of the 128MB flash) and also it comes with microSD slot which you can transfer audio and video clips onto it. The pricing of the BlackBerry Bold will be determined by the carriers. In the US, AT&T will be the one having highest chance to carry the Bold, as it’s got largest HSDPA coverage. T-mobile will be kind of unlikely, as it’s just started its 3G roll out. Anyway, RIM expects the Bold to ship worldwide this summer.

All-touch Motorola with a Kodak camera and xenon in the works

It seems like Motorola are finally prepping a high-end imaging device. Yes, you read it right. Leaked shots show a large touchscreen device with 5 megapixel autofocus camera, xenon flash and much more.

Motorola have been keeping away from the vicious specs race for quite some time now. But some possibly official leaked pictures of a new Motorola phone suggest otherwise.

The new Motorola phone has a 5 megapixel Kodak-branded camera with xenon flash, secondary LED flash for taking night video clips plus a large touchscreen display and TV-out support.

The OS of this stranger is still a mystery, but we can suppose it's either Android or Windows Mobile.

There is not any official word about this phone and honestly, the shots may as well turn out to be fakes. But even if they do, thanks for the nice moment of day dreaming.

Sony Ericsson W302

Sony Ericsson W302

The new Sony Ericsson W302 is expected to hit the shelves in October 2008. This phone is mentioned as the Walkman-branded version of S302. Also known as ‘Feng’, the W302 will come with 2 MP autofocus camera and 176×220 display screen.

Meant as an affordable cameraphone, the Sony Ericsson C510 has a 3 megapixel auto focus camera with Face detection and Smile shutter. There's no xenon flash as you might have guessed it (only a LED one) and you can get geotagging but only by cell triangulation, as there's no actual GPS receiver in there.

Sony Ericsson C901

Sony Ericsson C901 Filippa

Here we have a detailed look of the once rumored Sony Ericsson C901 Filippa. As everything has already been made official, Sony Ericsson has finally made this available on their website.

This is indeed a Cyber-shot device that will only boast 5-megapixel camera and not 8MP. Although it seems to be a little less on the high-end camera phones, 5MP could already make a decent cybershot device.

And like other of the Cyber-Shot range, this will also have autofocus, and other camera technologies such as Smile Shutter, BestPic, Smart Contrast, Face Detection, PhotoFix and Geotagging. This will also have Xenon flash, which could produce high-quality indoor images, Video Stabilizer, Video Recording, Red Eye reduction, and Video and Picture blogging support.

This handset is a quad-band GSM with support for 3G, Google Maps, and as well as Synchronisation, PictBridge, and Bluetooth technology. It will also have FM radio with RDS, built-in accelerometer, instant messaging, e-mail, video streaming, media player, Speakerphone, and internet capabilities like WAP 2.0, Web Feeds and access NetFront Web Browser. It has a 2.2-inch display with 240 x 320 pixels and 256k colors.

This device will be available on the second quarter of 2009 in Noble Black, Sincere Silver and Precious Peach colors.

Sony Ericsson W595

As you might guess from the 500 series model number, the W595 is a midrange phone which makes the appearance of HSDPA high-speed 3.5G data a welcome addition. On the other hand, this is possibly one of the most basic 3.2 megapixel cameras that we have seen for a long time - the Sony Ericsson W595 lacks autofocus or a flash, but it does support multishot photos and picture blogging.

In line with the new W902, the W595's media player supports shake control, Sony Ericsson's "SenseMe" tempo and mood based playlists and track identification. There is also a "share jack" which allows two people to listen to music at the same time.

It's not a bad looking device, and the 2.2" QVGA display should be suitable for most users. Of course, the W595 supports Memory Stick Micro cards (up to 2GB) which will be essential to use it as a music player.
